The Jazz Funeral is probably the most known but least understood of the
New Orleans traditions. The funeral for the perished actually takes place within
a funeral home or church and follows the conventional service of the deceased
denomination. The Jazz part of the service begins outside after the funeral en-
route to the graveyard for burial.
While en route to the cemetary brass bands usually play somber, slow-temple
hymns such as " Just a Closer Walk With Thee" or " Old Rugged Cross."
When the procession reaches the cemetary the pallbearer's will rock the casket
to the brass band beat for the deceased to have one last "dance."
